HELP! My parents are splitting up!

It started awhile back. You’re minding your own business when, out of the blue, you hear raised voices. Now it’s not unusual for there to be conflict in any household but you sense that this is different.

Something’s not right. Whispering in the kitchen late at night. Everything goes quiet when you walk in. Sitting on the stairs trying to overhear. Thoughts crowd your head:

  • “What’s going on?”
  • “It’s out of control!”
  • “Somebody help me!”
  • “Somebody tell me!”
  • “This can’t be happening!”
  •

And then the ultimate nightmare, “Mum and I have decided to separate.”
  • “For how long?” you ask. “Let’s just see how things go,” they say. But you know what they’re really saying and panic sets in.
  • “WHAT ABOUT US!” you yell. “HAS ANYONE THOUGHT HOW WE MIGHT FEEL? HAS ANYONE BOTHERED TO CONSULT US?”

Maybe you can relate to this story. Maybe you are going through this at the moment. Our advice to you is to find someone you trust who you can talk to and get some support. See our resources page for more help and this video from Childline DivorceSeparation.aspx.
